Bank House and Worswick Chambers wins Lord Mayor’s Special Award for Regeneration

UK and Europe 02 April 2026

Two landmark developments on Newcastle’s Pilgrim Street, Bank House and Worswick Chambers have jointly received the Lord Mayor’s Special Award for Regeneration at Newcastle City Council’s Lord Mayor Design Awards.

The Lord Mayor Design Awards celebrate exceptional achievements in architecture, planning, environmental design, and landscape architecture. The awards highlight the positive impact both projects are having on Newcastle’s evolving urban landscape and the ongoing transformation of Pilgrim Street.

As the first phase of the wider Pilgrim Street regeneration scheme, Bank House marked a major step forward in delivering over 400,000ft2 of modern office space in the centre of Newcastle. The 14-storey development features ground floor retail and 120,000ft2 of Grade A office space across 12 levels. Designed with flexibility in mind, each floor offers column free layouts capable of being divided into up to three tenancies.

Cundall replaced the original engineer on the project and played a multi-disciplinary engineering role providing BREEAM services and following BCO guidelines. We also ensured delivery remained on schedule while identifying opportunities to reduce costs and materials providing meaningful savings for the client and supporting the project’s sustainability goals.

Cundall not only engineered Bank House but also led the fit-out of the 10th floor, which now serves as our new global headquarters. Our relocation to Bank House marks a significant moment in Cundall’s nearly 50year history, having worked on the building through to completion. This further reinforces our longstanding commitment to Newcastle while positioning us to drive future innovation from the city where Cundall was first founded.

Tomás Neeson, Chairman, commented: "To see the redevelopment of Pilgrim Street come to fruition, create spaces for people to work in and socialise in, and to start to receive awards is a real celebration for the whole team. We are proud to have worked with Ryder Architecture, Bowmer + Kirkland, Avison Young and Taras Properties to transform this space in Newcastle."
