Demonstrating their dedication to clean energy and the UK's green industrial revolution, Teesside University has established a 2,000 to 2,500 m² state-of-the-art net zero carbon innovation facility which caters to academics, postgraduate students and industry professionals. Custom built is a key component of Tees Valley Combined Authority's regional innovation strategy and expanding on good practice at Tees Advanced Manufacturing Park in Middlesbrough, the initiative supports Teesside University's ambition to achieve net zero status by 2030. Cundall’s contributions included providing building services engineering, as well as BREEAM and sustainability consultancy.

The initial phase focused on assessing the performance gap between the designed and actual energy consumption. The design included an envelope with a low U-value and minimal air leakage rates, complemented by a coordinated façade design to minimise heat loss. The project integrated energy-efficient building services throughout, such as heat pumps, LED lighting, and daylight controls to reduce lighting energy consumption.

Steven Campbell, Associate Director, commented “Teesside University’s net zero carbon innovation facility demonstrates their commitment to clean energy.
