Radionuclide Dispensary (RND) is on the premises of the Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland. The building will replace the existing facility of the former Western Infirmary site and will be the largest dispensary in the UK, serving the Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Ayrshire & Arran, Lanarkshire, and Forth Valley health boards.

We provided a whole life embodied carbon assessment and circular economy strategy in alignment with the NHS Scotland’s Sustainable Design (SDaC) guide. Upfront and whole life embodied carbon have been assessed from stages two to four, and the design is close to achieving SDaC guide's target of 600 kgCO2e/m2 for upfront embodied carbon and has achieved whole life carbon benchmark of nearly 950 kgCO2e/m2. Furthermore, a circular economy approach was created following Zero Waste Scotland’s circular principles of designing out waste, keeping products and materials in use, regenerating natural systems, and responsible procurement of materials, all of which comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).

Lucia Savastano commented, "For such a critical healthcare project, we prioritised collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure a clear and consistent understanding of the Scottish Health Technical Note (SHTN) 02-01 requirements, which support NHS Scotland’s drive towards net-zero carbon emissions and climate-resilient healthcare infrastructure. With the specialist nature of a Radionuclide Dispensary, our team provided targeted support to interpret and apply the guidance within the context of a highly controlled and technically complex environment."

Balancing the needs of both energy efficiency and strict environmental control for the clean rooms within the proposed departments presented challenges for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems design. Despite this, we have successfully designed an optimum design solution which puts comfort at the forefront.
