Why are existing buildings not being retrofitted at the speed and scale necessary for climate change mitigation and adaptation?

This was the question anchoring Transform, a forum co-hosted by Cundall and Hassell and intended to disentangle the challenges and opportunities in accelerating retrofitting efforts within the built environment.

In this feature article, we expand upon the lessons, debates, and insights gleaned from the forum – why the transition is slow and complex, what are the consequences of inaction, what does a meaningful and project-specific roadmap look like, how do we finance the transition, and what mindset shifts bridge the gap between ambition and action.

One of the most hard-hitting takeaways for all of us was this existential reminder – if we do not start today, we cannot transform tomorrow.
