Magazine cover titled “SG Green Issue 22.0” dated March 2026. Image shows a person standing in a data centre corridor with server racks and green lighting. Headline reads “Building Greener Data Centres for a Sustainable Digital Future,” with additional cover lines about Singapore data centres and AI.

Data centres form the backbone of our global digital economy, yet they sit uncomfortably within the natural world. Being among the fastest-growing drivers of energy consumption, water use, and waste production.

This is the core paradox explored in The Illusion Centre, an article by Cundall which aims to dismantle the technical and “clever accounting” illusions currently masking the environmental impact of data centres.

In this featured article for SG Green magazine, Marcus Kan brings his insights and examines the assumptions behind power, redundancy, and carbon claims in data centres, along with the accountability mechanisms that can challenge them.

As the sector continues to scale in size and speed, it is important to recognise that data centre decarbonisation is more than just a built-environment issue, it is an ecosystemic challenge.
