This brand new seven storey building with 17,000m2 of space involved re-purposing the building design from a commercial to educational facility. Sustainability was key to this project and local materials were sourced where possible from manufacturers as well as sustainable timber and recycled materials. The overall construction budget was reduced by 7% through optimal design and 8% was saved on construction costs through value engineering and coordinated design.

Our building services team designed a new building management system which controls the HVAC system and consequently reduces energy consumption. Sustainability and WELL standards have been incorporated into the design to achieve top of the class facility. Water consumption was reduced by 23% compared to DEWA guidelines. The latest IT and AV technology for education spaces was adopted to inspire creativity in the classroom. A high-efficiency lighting system, featuring LED technology and an advanced control system, further minimised energy consumption.

Pierre Miquel, Director – Property & Facilities at the University of Wollongong commented: "The Cundall team has delivered high quality designs and thanks to the great team collaboration, we were able to make significant progress and on time delivery. Also based on Cundall’s value engineering assessment, we have been able to achieve reduction in overall construction cost."
