The aim of this project at Hamad International Airport was to expand the airport from the North Node. The client not only wanted to expand its facilities to meet demand, it also had the goal of creating one of the best airports in the world. The passenger terminal complex celebrates form, light and materiality while delivering an efficient and inspirational travel experience. Contemporary in design, the hotel and lounges also pay homage to the nation’s rich cultural heritage and natural environment.

Cundall was engaged as the Lead Design Consultant, working on a design and build basis to bring this project to life. At the heart of the expansion, the mezzanine level of the passenger terminal complex features stunning lounges spread across 6,200m², complete with vibrant activity hubs on the ground floor. Above them, the hotel spans the third and fourth floors, offering 6,525m² of elegantly designed spaces, including a sophisticated lobby, a stylish café, and essential support areas on the first floor. The fifth floor houses a state-of-the-art mechanical plant room, spanning 1,600m², which ensures efficient and seamless operation of the hotel and its facilities.

Abraham Fernandez, Lead Architect commented: “The lounges and hotel were uniquely positioned at the critical interface between the existing airport and the expansion. This required meticulous coordination with all stakeholders, from airport expansion designers to civil defence, and regulatory authorities, to secure the necessary approvals and permits while ensuring seamless integration and functionality.”

Key fact
