This Grade I listed cinema, originally built as a newsreel theatre, has been meticulously restored to its former grandeur. The main classic cinema at ground floor level has been carefully refurbished, with the design team working closely with English Heritage to recreate its authentic interior. Period-appropriate fixtures were specified throughout, and original features such as light fittings were restored and upgraded. The site was also extended to include two new screens, workshop spaces, and a vibrant restaurant/bar.
Cundall provided expert building services consultancy to sensitively integrate modern services into this heritage setting. We ensured all systems such as lighting, ventilation, and digital infrastructure were discreetly installed to preserve the building’s character. Where possible, original elements were retained and upgraded for energy efficiency, such as rewiring heritage light fittings. Our approach balanced conservation with innovation, supporting the transformation of the cinema into a state-of-the-art venue while respecting its architectural and cultural significance.
Tomás Neeson, Partner, commented, “Serious consideration was given to preserving the building’s historic character, given its age and cultural significance. Restoring and reshaping heritage spaces in Newcastle city centre is something we take great pride in. Seeing this project recognised with multiple awards across the built environment is a testament to the care and expertise that went into it.”
It was a privilege to help breathe new life into such a culturally significant building. The careful integration of modern technology within a beautifully restored heritage setting has created a space that continues to inspire, entertain, and connect with audiences in the heart of Newcastle.”
