The Theatre Royal’s £7m redevelopment marked its most significant transformation since opening in 1788. Delivered in two phases, the project expanded the stage into a neighbouring building, adding 76m² of space and a new flying system to support modern productions. The second phase converted the remaining space into a new Learning Centre, café bistro, box office, and reception suite, enhancing the theatre’s public offering while respecting its Grade I listed status.

Following our successful role in the 2007 refurbishment, Cundall was reappointed to provide structural engineering support four years later. We advised on the integration of new structural elements within the constraints of the listed building, including access limitations, floor loadings, and construction sequencing. Our team also supported the restoration of the auditorium to its original Frank Matcham design, while enabling improvements to the theatre’s internal environment and technical performance capabilities.

Paul Hards, Partner, commented “It was a privilege to have been part of the team working on this significant historical building in the centre of Newcastle - helping to sensitively integrate modern performance spaces while preserving its architectural heritage for future generations.”

The works carried out included structural alterations in the roof for new light weight stage lift facilities and a stage right exit. This allowed better facilities for productions, as well as restoring the original Frank Matcham Edwardian interior.
