Situated within an existing BREEAM Outstanding building, Rabobank’s UK office demonstrates how a CAT B fit-out can achieve exceptional sustainability outcomes.

Existing CAT A elements – including ceilings, lighting, and MEP components – were retained and integrated into the new layout, while furniture from Rabobank’s previous office was reused or refurbished where possible. In total, 17% of materials by mass were reused, and 53% contained recycled content. This resource-efficient approach resulted in a low upfront embodied carbon intensity of 128 kgCO₂e/m² and a whole life carbon value of 417 kgCO₂e/m².

Cundall led Rabobank’s sustainability strategy, delivering a robust whole life carbon assessment and a circular economy roadmap. The project achieved BREEAM Outstanding and is targeting WELL Platinum certification, with our expertise shaping low carbon design decisions, identifying material reuse opportunities, and embedding a health-centred design approach to support long-term environmental and wellbeing performance.

Alex Mar Morales comments, “This project demonstrates the value of involving the client in sustainability conversations from day one. By working together throughout the design process, we were able to make informed choices about the materials and finishes that genuinely supported the project’s ambitions. The outcome is a workplace that feels considered and people‑focused, balancing flexibility and wellbeing with a strong low‑carbon mindset and reflecting how collaboration can raise both environmental performance and design quality.”

Delivering Rabobank’s new workplace was an opportunity to embed whole life carbon reduction, circular economy principles, and health and wellbeing into everyday decision-making. By rethinking procurement, maximising reuse opportunities, and integrating WELL and BREEAM ambitions from the outset, we created a beautiful, high performing, low-impact environment that truly reflects Rabobank’s sustainability values.
