At the Amos Bursary’s annual mentor matching evening, Robert Marney received ‘Best Mentor of the Year’ award.
The Amos Bursary is helping to positively shape the futures of Britain’s talented young people of African and Caribbean heritage, creating a more diverse workforce.
Robert has been part of the mentoring scheme with the Amos Bursary for over three years, being one of the first mentors from the built environment.
“I joined the initiative because I know firsthand how important a bit of a guidance can be. When I was younger, there was someone for me who helped me with professional advice that helped me beyond my professional career,” says Robert. “These young adults have so much potential and I’m glad to be able to part of their journey finding success in what they enjoy.”
Nathan Essel, Robert’s first mentee, now Software Engineer at Bloomberg, comments: “Robert was my professional mentor during university. He was very helpful in encouraging me and keeping me accountable throughout the mentorship program. This was particularly shown during the internship and graduate job application process.
“He was also very friendly, approachable and easy to talk to. During our monthly meetings we were able to talk about casual topics and he would even remember things I had previously spoken about.”
Sonia Palmer, Mentor Coordinator at the Amos Bursary, reflects on why Robert stood out as the Mentor of the Year: “Robert has been a valued and very proactive mentor with the Amos Bursary for many years. He has provided his student with excellent advice and valuable opportunities. At the mentor matching event Robert gave the new mentors valuable advice and an insight on his mentoring journey.”
