Cundall win Best Large Project at The Northwest Regional Structural Awards

UK and Europe 02 October 2023

Cundall’s structural and civil engineering teams, led by Clare Dawson, Principal Engineer, were celebrating at The North West Regional Structural Awards when the Four New Bailey project won The Best Large Project Award.

The award ceremony seeks to celebrate excellence in structural engineering in the region, and speaking on the team’s work and dedication to the project, Clare Dawson said “It was a privilege to work on such a fantastic scheme. There were some unique challenges presented by the diagrid frame, and the project would not have been successful without true collaboration between Cundall’s structural team, the architect and steelwork fabricator. Congratulations to everyone involved!”

Four New Bailey is English Cities Fund’s fourth project in the New Bailey development. It is an integral part of the Salford Central masterplan, one of the most complex and successful urban regeneration projects across the UK. This new development overlooks the river Irwell and New Bailey Street, with twelve storeys providing over 200,000ft² (18,580m2) of lettable retail and workspace to the site.

Cundall provided innovative solutions across various parts of the project. We used parametric modelling to explore geometric options for the diagrid structure – thereby saving approximately 400 metric tonnes of embodied carbon, and reduced frame costs.

We also worked collaboratively with the architects to maintain the aesthetic of the diagrid design and create a unique building, inspired by the bridges along River Irwell and creating a modern design that reflects Salford’s culture and identity.
