Breaking barriers: shaping the future of engineering in KSA
As we marked International Women’s Day earlier this month, the celebration goes beyond a single day - it’s about amplifying the voices, achievements, and impact of women every day. Below, we hear from some of the women in our Riyadh office about how they're challenging norms, redefining leadership and inspiring the next generation.
For Ayesha Guha, Design Manager, the journey has been one of breaking barriers, from being the only woman on-site to advocating for design to be considered as more than an aesthetic element. She also highlights the significance of representation, stating: " You know, when we talk about fostering an inclusive society, it’s not just about policies or big movements - it’s about the everyday choices we make, the conversations we have, and the actions we take. We must ensure that women have the same opportunities as men in education, the workplace, and leadership roles." She also shared a powerful message as a manager: "It's not just about reaching the top; it's about making sure others can climb with you.” Whether it’s calling out bias, mentoring young girls, supporting women-led businesses, or simply making space for women to be heard - every action matters.”
“Learn everything you can - but don’t be afraid to unlearn, too. The industry will evolve, and so will you.”
Ayesha Ahmed, Sustainability Consultant, shares her insights into why it's an exciting time to be working in Riyadh. “As the local engineering sector is evolving, with more opportunities for women in leadership and technical roles, companies are prioritising diversity, and workplace environments are becoming more inclusive. There are still challenges, but cultural shifts are making it easier for women to balance work and personal life while excelling in their careers. Being part of this transformation is empowering, as women engineers are actively shaping the future of Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure. When asked about her advice to other young engineers she said: “Believe in your abilities and don’t hesitate to share your ideas. Confidence is key to making an impact. Every challenge is a learning opportunity, so embrace them with an open mind. Also, find mentors and allies early on. A strong support system helps navigate the industry, opens doors to new opportunities, and provides valuable guidance.”
Sameemah Hassen, Senior Structural Technician, believes that “education and awareness are key to promoting understanding and appreciation of diversity. The way we raise our children shapes the kind of adults, leaders, and citizens they become. Imposing outdated ideas of what it means to be a woman limits potential and influences career choices. Instead, we should focus on raising capable individuals and moving beyond gender labels.” Throughout her career, Sameemah has been fortunate to have supportive managers who encouraged her to aim high. When asked what advice she would give to other women in the industry, she responded, “Don’t be afraid to take on difficult tasks and learn from your failures. Know your worth and never hesitate to ask for what you deserve.”
At Cundall, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. By championing diversity and creating equal opportunities for all, we continue to support the next generation of leaders shaping the built environment.
