English Heritage

The refurbishment of the semi-scenic lift at Whitby Abbey Visitor Centre helps protect a vital part of one of England’s most recognisable heritage sites, while supporting the long-term operation of the building. Providing essential access between the ground and first floors, the lift plays an important role in ensuring the attraction remains accessible and inclusive for all visitors.

Cundall’s vertical transportation team supported English Heritage in evaluating the future of the lift and determining whether a full replacement was necessary. Detailed surveys confirmed that the primary structure remained in good condition, enabling a targeted refurbishment. Upgrading the controls, hydraulic equipment, ram and door operator improved reliability and safety, while reducing disruption, lowering embodied carbon and delivering better value for English Heritage.

'Cundall was diligent, attentive and knowledgeable consultants throughout the project. They helped us deliver a great modernisation project and we would work with them again.' Matt Bishop, National Project Manager; English Heritage.
