This office building in a prime location extends 7,000m2 and comprises seven floors over basement car parking. We were engaged by the client to complete a whole life carbon reduction feasibility study, resulting in a strategy to reduce carbon consumption and optimise the building's energy use. In addition, we undertook the building services design for the fit-out of the sixth floor.

As part of the upgrade, we created an Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) Virtual Environment (IESVE) model to carry out dynamic thermal analysis and estimate the annual cooling and heating demand. This allowed us to review suitable heat pump technology. Finally, a spatial test fit for roof plant was carried out to locate the new systems.

Derry Kearney, Partner, commented, "The existing mechanical services and Building Energy Management System (BEMS) was approaching its end of life and was not operating at optimal efficiency. Imminent chiller, boiler and ventilation plant replacement at Riverside Two therefore offers an opportunity to progress towards achieving net zero carbon for the building."

The multi-function heat pump unit will reduce energy consumption by 26%.
