Bayswater Station (Biraliny) is a key component of METRONET, Western Australia's ambitious program to upgrade Perth’s train network. Designed by Hassell and constructed by Evolve Bayswater (Acciona and the Public Transport Authority), the project was a complex undertaking focused on modernising the ageing station. The upgraded Station encourages greater public transport use, featuring a new bus interchange integrated into the station precinct to seamlessly connect rail and bus services. It also significantly improves cycling and pedestrian access, enhancing the overall connectivity and accessibility of the area.

Cundall’s ESD team was appointed to provide all necessary assessments to achieve a 6 Star Green Star Railway Station rating and ensure alignment with METRONET’s wider sustainability strategy. Key sustainability features include a 95kW PV system, high-efficiency water fixtures, thoughtful wayfinding and passenger safety measures, interactive public artwork, and extensive vegetated areas incorporated into the precinct.

Oliver Grimaldi commented: “Every decision behind the station’s design has been driven by sustainability, from integrating local bus and cycling infrastructure to reduce reliance on car ownership, to selecting resilient vegetation that require minimal irrigation.”

Key fact

The station has achieved an estimated 31% reduction across in annual greenhouse gas emissions and 30% reduction in potable water consumption compared to the GBCA’s Green Star benchmark building.

Key fact

Climate resilient plant species were selected and will only be irrigated during the establishment period. Over 100 trees were planted within the station precinct to improve the ecological value of the area.

Key fact

The Noongar place name for Bayswater is Biraliny and the narrative is ‘The track where the Merenj (food plants) is located’.
