121 Castlereagh Street is a major redevelopment of the heritage-listed former David Jones department store, transforming it into a 32-storey luxury mixed-use residential and commercial tower. Located in the heart of Sydney (Gadigal Country), the project includes 11,500 square metres of premium-grade office space, an upgraded retail podium, and an elevated residential addition featuring 98 luxury apartments.

Cundall provided ESD consultancy services from the early design stage through to completion. Our team led the Green Star submission for the office and retail floors, as well as BASIX and NatHERS assessments for the residential tower. The office space is targeting a 6 Star Green Star – Design & As Built rating and a Platinum WELL certification, while the retail space is targeting a 5 Star Green Star – As Built rating.

"David Jones is an iconic department store with heritage-listed elements. Our team devised a strategy that preserved the historic façade while completely reimagining the interior, ensuring robust sustainability outcomes. The building will also feature a striking central atrium for a unique open workspace that will be fully electric.” Julian Bott, Partner

Key fact

Smart decisions behind the HVAC system, installation of solar panels, efficient lighting and the use of low carbon materials contributed to a strong Green Star submission for the office space.
