Whole life carbon assessment (WLCA) is an emerging method of assessing the built environment’s embodied and operational carbon. Greater London leads the way with WCLA assessments, and overtime likely to become a part of national building regulations.
The most recent update to RICS whole life carbon assessment methodology was in 2017, covering all building and infrastructure types. The revised standard (RICS Whole Life Carbon standards - 2nd edition) brings guidance up to date with UK climate legislation, and consistency with forthcoming EU standards. It also incorporates thinking from guidance's such as CIBSE TM65, IStructE, LETI, RIBA, and others, making it more user-friendly.
An increasing number of local authorities have made mandatory whole life carbon assessments part of local planning requirements for some projects. Over time, it is likely that WLCA will become a formal part of national building regulations.
Join this 2.5 hour session providing a digestible update on RICS Whole Life Carbon Standard 2023 (2nd Edition) which is set to become the world-leading standard for consistent and accurate carbon measurement in the built environment.
Join Lee Leston-Jones as he will be discussing RICS Life Cycle Stage A – carbon emissions and removals from any activities necessary to complete construction of assets. He will be speaking alongside Simon Sturgis, Targeting Zero, Dr Qian Li, Turner & Townsend, Paul Astle, Ramboll, and Clara Bagenal George, Introba, giving insight into the future of Whole Life Carbon Assessment methodology in the construction industry.
