Located in the heart of Newcastle, we assisted the transformation of the Farrell Centre, a historic Grade II- listed building, into a new centre for architecture. The refurbishment consisted of a new, brightly coloured staircase, cutting through the entire building along with a lift being inserted over three floors. This, allows access to the multi- use spaces.all while maintaining the original brickwork, fireplaces and features throughout.

The large openings that needed to be formed in the existing floors and steelwork to insert the staircase required structural challenges. This meant the team had to carry out investigative work and had to consider construction sequencing to avoid damaging the structure and to establish the existing structure arrangements. Likewise, throughout the process, new openings were made in the existing walls to allow us to add the lift door openings and the new service routes whilst keeping the original brickwork and features exposed.
