Alex Shan wins CIBSE ANZ Young Engineer of the Year

Australia 11 July 2022

Cundall Senior Mechanical Engineer Alex Shan has won the CIBSE ANZ Jack Pirie Award - Young Engineer of the Year 2022 at the official ceremony at NSW Parliament House on 7 July, 2022. The award recognises an engineer with less than seven years of professional experience who has demonstrated technical excellence, exceptional professionalism, and a positive vision for bettering our built environment.

“We are extremely proud of Alex’s achievement,” said Garrit Schott, Cundall Australia Managing Director and Partner, Building Services. “He is a talented, dedicated and inventive engineer who is determined to play his part in delivering the net zero future.”

“Seeing one of our people rewarded for their ability to find new ways to solve complex and challenging technical problems is inspiring for the entire Cundall team.”

A Chartered Building Services Engineer, Alex is passionate about the integration of smart building approaches, data, and analytics as tools to improve building performance and occupant experience.

In the video he created as part of his entry, Alex outlined a vision for 2030 where automation has reshaped work to give people more personal time, and as a result, community and public buildings become more important as places for connection and engagement.

He envisions these buildings as energy-efficient, flexible, and data-centric, with capacity to adapt to different purposes and occupancy patterns. Smart building technology and analytics enhance the ability of facilities managers, building owners and building occupants to prevent energy waste and fine-tune maintenance to prevent equipment breakdowns.

“Winning this award means a lot to me - it's recognition for my career so far, for the company I have chosen to work for, and especially for the people that I have had the opportunity to learn from,” Alex Shan said.

“The Award Ceremony was definitely a high, and I'm now even more excited to put my focus back on high performance solutions.”
