The Cundall critical systems team design data centres for a variety of clients with different needs. An important part of this process is undertaking site feasibility studies to understand what type of data centre is suitable. Cundall has developed a digital tool to streamline the feasibility study process based on parametric design principles.

The design tool instantly produces a data centre space plan based on user inputs and parametric modelling. The user can change any input parameter and the 3D model will update automatically. This allows immediate feedback on suitability of a design and offers crucial understanding during the site selection of a project.

The nature of a parametric model is that a fixed number of inputs are used to create a wide range of outputs. In this instance, the tool takes the data hall area and aspect ratio, IT load and site location to produce a concept data centre design. The tool outputs building sizes, equipment space planning and estimated system efficiency, amongst other more technical aspects. It can also provide options for multiple cooling systems.

Aside from the significant time saving from using the tool, the accuracy of the output has been carefully considered. All data used for the calculations is based on years of design experience that has been tried and tested. The calculations also uses CIBSE rules of thumb and a range of equipment data from manufacturers. All the outputs have been validated against real life facilities so we can be confident in the information it produces.

The tool outputs a 3D model showing the overall space planning of the site. It also outputs technical data such as PUE estimates.

This tool has proved invaluable to our clients during early design discussions. It is editable at the click of a mouse with revised outputs produced immediately, making optioneering interactive and helping design teams make informed design decisions quickly.
