A 9,000m2 net zero carbon, Passivhaus new build school plus sports hall to serve 900 pupils. The school is located on a greenfield site as part of the wider masterplan for the local region. The new building will inspire pupils to push boundaries with open creative spaces as well as more traditional teaching and learning facilities.

Our team’s net zero carbon strategy, which was supported by the forward-thinking client (West Sussex County Council), met and exceeded expectations regarding energy. The fabric form factor, insulation and over-heating mitigation was integral to the fabric first approach from Stage 1. Ground source heat pumps provide the low levels of heating needs and air source heat pumps provide hot water. The school has no fossil burning appliances or equipment, and an extensive roof mounted photovoltaic array which will off-set electrical use.

Paul Sperring, Project Manager added “It was great to have a client willing to put policy into action. Working alongside Atkins Architecture and Faithful & Gould, we’ve completed the Stage 3 tender and submitted planning for this sector-leading educational facility. With all the design being done remotely during the pandemic, this project demonstrates how we can overcome hurdles and continue to push the boundaries of sustainable design.”
