We have strengthened our building services team in Manchester, by appointing Joseph Lazell as Partner and Simon Thurstan as Associate Director.

With a master’s in architectural engineering, Joseph has contributed his expertise to a wide range of new-build and refurbishment projects, locally and internationally. More recently, Joseph led the building services scheme design for Eden, New Bailey, Salford.

As a chartered engineer, Joseph is an active contributor to professional groups within the region and recently served as a sustainability advisor and judge for the Regional RIBA Awards and was on the judging panel for the BCO NextGen Awards in 2024. Joseph also keenly supports the next generation of industry professionals by tutoring at the Manchester School of Architecture.

In his role as partner, Joseph will lead on client service offering and delivery as well as the development of the building services team in Manchester. When asked why he joined Cundall and what his vision for the business as a partner was, Joseph explained:

"Cundall's position at the forefront of sustainable engineering and its reputation for design excellence were key motivators for me. My experience of working with Cundall on various projects (including Eden and Microsoft Rare) has given me a deep appreciation of their commitment to quality and innovation. I look forward to playing a key role in elevating Cundall's legacy of designing exceptional, sustainable spaces."

Paul Kenyon, partner at Cundall said:

“We are delighted to welcome Joseph to Cundall and our leadership team. His skills and experience in supporting clients with their ambitions, creating conceptual and detailed designs for low energy and sustainable engineering solutions, are essential in the transition to net zero. His passion for being a catalyst for change matches our own, so we are excited to see what Joseph can achieve as part of Cundall.”

Simon is a chartered engineer and fellow of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management. With over 25 years of industry experience across many sectors, his expertise lies within schools, healthcare, residential, energy generation, ground- and air-source heat pump systems, as well as site installation practices. Simon was previously partner at Ridge and Partners.

On joining Cundall, Simon explained:

“Cundall’s reputation for being ambitious in what can be achieved with sustainable design resonates with my own. I am looking forward to working with clients to reduce emissions released through the design, construction, operation and the end of a building’s life, and go beyond the conversation about energy in use.”
