As university campuses densify and activity extends beyond daylight hours, artificial light has become a critical but often overlooked component of sustainability, wellbeing and placemaking.

At the 2026 TEFMA Conference, Bettina Easton, Cundall's Head of Lighting Design in Australia, will present Why darkness matters: Dark sky planning for university campuses. Joined by Dr Wenye Hu from the University of Sydney, Bettina will explore how dark sky planning can help balance safety, functionality and campus identity while minimising impacts on human health, biodiversity and the night environment.

Drawing on Cundall's expertise, the session will demonstrate how targeted illumination, controlled contrast and the thoughtful integration of light and shadow can create more comfortable, resilient and sustainable campus environments.
