Cundall was appointed on a multi-disciplinary basis for the redevelopment of intu Eldon Square shopping centre. This redevelopment ensures this vision is upheld by creating a vibrant retail focal point for the 25 million shoppers it attracts.

This redevelopment, completed in February 2010, maintains a place in the top 10 UK shopping centres for intu Properties plc (former Capital Shopping Centre) portfolio. Major developments included demolishing a multi-storey car park for replacement with over 17,500m² of new retail units and relocating the existing Greenmarket and a new department store. A new 11-stand bus station was created to allow for the formation of new retail units in the old bus concourse.

Cundall also assisted with the highway and transport engineering for the streetscape surrounding the centre and street lighting to extend the 'Grainger Town' street design concept to suit Newcastle City Council's requirements. Cundall's input ensured easy access and good connections with existing transport networks.

To speed up construction time, Cundall designed ‘smart engineering’ solutions which included initiatives such as the combination of steel and concrete structures and prefabricated M&E services. Cundall also devised sustainable design concepts that will result in significant energy savings and reduced carbon emissions, such as using the thermal mass of the shopping mall floor as a source of radiant heating and cooling.

The lighting design focused on integrating the light sources into the interior design details such that the space itself was illuminated and the visitor was not distracted by lamps or luminaires.  The key to the success was the level of detail in the lighting analysis to ensure where lamps were concealed then the appropriate surface brightness and illumination would be achieved throughout the various spaces.
