Tyneside Cinema

Newcastle, United Kingdom

The existing Grade II listed cinema, originally constructed as a 'news reel' cinema, was restored to its former glory.

Cundall was appointed to provide building services and lighting design. The design team worked closely with English Heritage to recreate the authentic interior of the cinema. The building was also remodelled and extended to incorporate state-of-the-art digital technology and create two new cinema screens. The new screening room and new electra are linked via a new and vibrant restaurant/bar room, which allows visitors to mingle and relax before and after the screening.

Specifying the various fixtures and fittings that were used was done carefully, so that they would be in the Art Deco style of the period. When possible, restoration and refitting was carried out of fixtures; for example, the main light fittings in the classic cinema were removed and rewired, enabling them to become an efficient light source without compromising on appearance.
