The London Clinic is one of the city's oldest and largest independent hospitals. The clinic has operated since 1932, developing an international reputation as one of the UK’s leading independent acute hospitals. The clinic treats approximately 20,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients annually.

The clinic is designed to provide state-of-the-art care for cancer sufferers, with 47 individual bedrooms and 22 day care pods. Cundall was appointed to provide building services engineering, sustainable design and ICT & AV and communications for the cancer centre and consulted on feasibility of a major refurbishment of the existing clinic.

This Grade II listed building was refurbished to provide consulting rooms. All eight floors are flooded with light from an impressive central glass atrium that extends below ground, allowing natural light to reach as far as the basements.

Three of the hospital’s eight floors were built underground to accommodate new radiotherapy equipment (Cyberknife, Linac and CT machines). Patients are assigned to either a positive pressure floor or to a negative pressure floor, depending on their condition prior to treatment. Patient rooms and nurse stations are equipped with high quality AV systems for TV, DVD, Internet and intranet access. The touch-screen technology allows to control the lighting, blinds and room temperature.

Patient room controls are replicated at nurse stations so that staff can monitor room settings and assist patients. Separation of the patient’s touch screen from the nurse/doctor PC keyboard in the room helps to minimise the risk of infection. In addition, all metalwork is coated with an anti-bacterial finish and all water taps operate by sensor, so no direct contact is required.

Accommodation/installations include the following:

  • Radiotherapy treatment (4 linear accelerators)
  • Oncology OPD/day care (24 beds)
  • Pharmacy
  • Inpatient accommodation (48 beds including 12 isolation rooms)
  • Loading bay
  • Major plant room/substation/standby diesel generators
  • Solar panels
  • Computer room
  • Tunnel link beneath Devonshire Place to main clinic site from the centre
  • Building Better Healthcare Awards (2010), Best Hospital Design, highly commended
