Portadown Community Treatment and Care Centre

County Armagh, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

In March 2010, Cundall, Avanti Architects and Kennedy FitzGerald Architects handed over a new health and care centre in Portadown, Northern Ireland. The building is located on the edge of the town centre, is easily accessible by foot, bus or car, and overlooks the popular landscaped walks along the adjacent River Bahn.

Cundall was involved in the building services for the centre and this project has been shortlisted for ‘Best Sustainable Design’ at the Building Better Healthcare Awards. The compact triangular building was planned around a central atrium, making it accessible to all users of the building.

The design and integration of the structure and the services of the building have been developed to provide a high degree of flexibility, energy efficiency and sustainability.

Portadown’s community treatment and care centre is intended to be a flagship development that will stimulate town regeneration. The new centre provides a ‘one stop shop' of primary and community care services. The building arrangement is easy to understand for users and allows direct access to departments without patients having to pass through one department to reach another.

The flagship development has been built with future flexibility at the forefront of the design, to accommodate changes in healthcare procedures and clinical needs.
