Freya Murray

Graduate Structural Engineer

Newcastle, United Kingdom

Cundall is committed to helping me ensure that I am undertaking what I need for my training and helping me to acheive my objectives.

After graduating in Structural Engineering with Architectural Design from Heriot-Watt University, I spent the summer as a full time athlete before I started looking for a job. I had seen Cundall’s work in the press and I wanted to work for a company where I could become chartered, and this and the variety of disciplines and projects were the main reasons why I applied.

When I left university I felt I lacked practical experience, but I have been given the opportunity to gain that knowledge here. It has helped me to put the theory I have learnt into practice. The projects I have worked on have given me a lot more confidence in what I am doing and there is always someone there to help, if I need it.

Seeing things in real life helps them to make sense. Cundall has given me the opportunity to work on a range of projects and spend time on site as well. As I settle in I am being given more and more responsibility and I am now going to client meetings as well, which is really interesting. I am currently involved with some really varied projects, including the regeneration of a harbour with a workshop/office building, and Durham County Cricket Club.

I am aiming to become chartered, and I have been supported and provided guidance. I have regular updates with my mentor and the senior engineer I work with.

Freya represented Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic Marathon. She finished in 44th place and was the first British woman to finish with a time of 2:32:14. Please click here to see her press coverage.
